Posted by Oxford Gift Shop on 26th Oct 2026
Located on vibrant Turl Street right in the heart of Oxford, Jesus College Oxford is one of the university’s most welcoming, historically fascinating, and culturally distinct institutions. Known for its picturesque honey-colored quads, historic chapel, and rich Welsh heritage, Jesus College holds a proud place among Oxford’s Elizabethan foundations.
While many Oxford colleges trace their origins to medieval bishops or Norman lords, Jesus College stands as the only Oxford college founded during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. But how did a Welsh churchman persuade the Tudor queen to establish a college, and how did it earn its nickname as "the Welsh college of Oxford"? Here is the rich history, royal legacy, and famous figures behind Jesus College, Oxford.
1. Queen Elizabeth I & The Tudor Royal Charter
The founding of Jesus College in 1571 was a historic milestone for Elizabethan education and the Protestant Reformation in Britain.
-
Hugh Price's Petition: The driving force behind the college was Hugh Price, a Welsh lawyer and Treasurer of St David's Cathedral. He petitioned Queen Elizabeth I to found a new college that would educate clergy for the Protestant Church in Wales and England.
-
The Royal Charter (1571): Queen Elizabeth I granted the charter on June 27, 1571, officially naming it The College of Jesus within the City and University of Oxford, of Queen Elizabeth's Foundation. She became the official Founder, making Jesus College the only Tudor college established by a ruling monarch in Oxford.
-
A Welsh Legacy: Although open to all, the college established strong financial, educational, and cultural links to Wales from its inception, providing scholarships specifically for Welsh students for centuries.
2. Architectural Marvels: From Turl Street to the Cheng Building
A stroll through Jesus College offers a seamless transition from 16th-century Tudor quadrangles to state-of-the-art 21st-century architecture.
-
First Quad & Chapel: Built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the First Quad features a striking Elizabethan gatehouse and a serene chapel consecrated in 1621. The chapel retains its original dark oak screen and regular services conducted in both English and Welsh.
-
Second Quad & Fellows' Library: The Second Quad, completed in the late 17th century, is home to the historic Fellows' Library, housing rare early Welsh manuscripts, original Elizabethan texts, and historic Celtic artefacts.
-
The Digital Hub & Cheng Building: Opening a new chapter in the 2020s, the college expanded along Cornmarket Street with the flagship Cheng Building—a state-of-the-art digital hub and learning centre blending modern design with academic tradition.
3. From T.E. Lawrence to Prime Ministers and Poets
Jesus College has cultivated an extraordinary range of historical figures who have shaped literature, military history, science, and politics worldwide.
-
T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"): The legendary scholar, military officer, and author studied History at Jesus College from 1907 to 1910, writing his thesis on Crusader castles before embarking on his historic journeys in the Middle East.
-
Harold Wilson: The two-time British Prime Minister studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Jesus College in the 1930s, going on to lead the country during major social reforms in the 1960s and 1970s.
-
Literary Giants: Celebrated poets and writers such as Henry Vaughan, Gerard Manley Hopkins (who taught here), and famous Welsh scholars like Sir John Rhys all developed their academic passions within these walls.
